Juan and Luz began their business 20 years ago with only one weaving machine. At first they only made fabrics, but eventually they began turning their fabric into hammocks. Ten years ago they opened their own shop in Otavalo, and they now have four machines. The additional machines have improved their production capacity dramatically; they have grown from a strictly local business to exporting to Costa Rica, Puerto Rico, Panama, Curacao, the Caiman Islands, Canada, Spain and the United States.
Juan and Luz’s hard work and ingenuity have allowed them to raise four children: Sandy Paola, 24; Samy, 22; Juan León, 13 and Amaya, 11. Their eldest daughter, Sandy Paola, is currently studying industrial engineering in Quito and has already started to help them with ideas and guidance for the family business. She visits them every weekend. Juan and Luz hope that all of their children will pursue a higher education and become professionals. Luz says that their fair trade business has allowed them to remain loyal to their cultural background and to maintain a strong family bond.
